How to artificially age (gray) wood.

"We took the fresh cedar that you provided us with and brushed it with the following:
We mixed 3 gallons of apple cider vinegar with 1 lb of steel wool. The steel wool dissolved in 3-4 days. The acetic acid in the vinegar combines with the steel to create iron acetate. That acts as a natural stain when it reacts with tannins in the wood.
We then added 2 parts water to one part vinegar solution and brushed it lightly on the cedar.
You can vary the look considerably by adjusting the concentration of the vinegar mix. Pine will respond similarly, especially if it is first brushed with black tea to infuse it with extra tannins (pine does not have as much naturally-occurring tannin as cedar). Oak has a huge amount of tannin and will turn nearly black. It's been pretty fun to experiment with! "
